Account deletion
Delete your Duefree account
How to delete your account in Duefree, the app for your spending and your shared bills made by Aman Jaiswal, and what happens to your data when you do.
In the app
Profile → Close account → Delete Permanently. Your account is deleted straight away.
By email, without the app
Email privacy@duefree.co.uk. We confirm with the email address on your account before deleting it.
Before you start
Two things must be true before an account can be closed. If either isn’t, Duefree tells you and your account is not deleted. Your profile photo is removed as soon as you tap Delete Permanently, even if the deletion is then refused; you can add it again in Profile.
1. No shared bill is still open
Every shared bill between you and anyone else must be settled, in a group or not. For each one, do one of these:
- Settle up with the other person, and record it in Duefree.
- For a bill someone put you on that was never yours, tap Not mine on it.
- For a bill you paid that nobody on it has settled or declined yet, you can remove it instead: open the bill and choose Remove bill from its menu.
- If someone owes you and you are happy to let it go, agree that with them and record it as settled.
Until then the app says “Settle all your balances before closing your account.”
2. Duefree Plus has stopped billing
If you subscribe to Duefree Plus, cancel it first in the store that bills you. Deleting your account doesn’t cancel a store subscription, so Duefree won’t close an account while Plus is active, in its grace period, on hold or paused. A subscription you have already cancelled doesn’t block deletion, even if its paid period hasn’t run out; the rest of that period is lost when the account goes.
- Google Play: open the Google Play Store app, tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions, choose Duefree Plus and tap Cancel subscription.
- App Store: on your iPhone, open Settings → your name → Subscriptions, choose Duefree Plus and tap Cancel Subscription.
If you try to close your account while Plus still bills, Duefree says “Cancel Duefree Plus in Google Play before closing your account” (or in the App Store) and offers a button that opens the store. If you cancelled in the App Store a moment ago, try again in a few minutes.
Delete your account in the app
- Open Duefree and go to the Profile tab.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Close account.
- Read the message, then tap Delete Permanently.
Your account is deleted straight away and you are signed out.
Ask us by email
You don’t need the app, or to install it again. Email privacy@duefree.co.uk, ideally from the email address on your Duefree account, and ask for the account to be deleted. We will send a confirmation to the email address on the account, or to your relay address, which Apple forwards to you. Reply to it and we will delete the account and confirm, within one month at the latest. If an open shared bill or a Plus subscription stops the deletion, we will tell you what is needed. If an open shared bill is the reason and you still want your data erased, we will delete what only you can see (your own entries and budgets) straight away, and close the account once the open bills are settled or removed.
What is deleted
- Your sign-in and your email address.
- Your personal expenses and income, and your budgets.
- Your friendships and friend requests, and your group memberships.
- The reminders you sent or received.
- Your devices’ registrations for notifications, and your Plus membership status.
- Your name, which is replaced with “Deleted User”, and your profile photo. When you close your account in the app, the photo is deleted from our storage at the same time; if that step fails, email us and we will remove it.
Deletion takes effect in Duefree’s live systems immediately, apart from short-lived operational logs. Our database provider may hold short-lived operational backups, which are overwritten on its own schedule; we don’t use them to restore individual accounts.
What is kept, and for how long
- Bills you shared. Shared bills you were on, including the ones you paid, the shares on them and the settlements recorded on them stay in the other people’s history, so their records still add up. They show “Deleted User” in place of your name, with no photo. They have no set end date: they stay while Duefree runs, because other people’s records depend on them.
- Removed bills. When the person who paid a shared bill removes it, Duefree keeps a record of the removal (the bill’s title, its amount and the shares on it), which the people who were on it can ask us for. If you were on such a bill, or removed one you paid, that record stays for the other people on it, also under “Deleted User” and with no set end date.
- Groups you created pass to the member who joined first. A group with no other members is deleted, unless it still holds bills.
- Purchase records, if you bought Plus: the store’s purchase token or transaction identifier, the plan and the dates, the record the store returned about the subscription, and any move of an App Store subscription between accounts. They are no longer linked to your name or email address, with two exceptions: a record of a move names both accounts, and if Plus is later bought on the same Apple ID from another Duefree account, that subscription and its purchase record move to that account. They have no set end date, because a store can present the same purchase again at any time, and the record stops it being claimed by another account.
- Emails you sent us, including your deletion request, are kept until they are no longer needed to show what was asked and done.
The full details are in the privacy policy, under How long data is kept.
On your phone
Deleting your account doesn’t remove the app from your phone, or the Duefree AI model if you downloaded it (about 2.6 GB). Uninstall the app to remove both.
If you signed in with Apple
You can also stop Duefree using your Apple ID: on an iPhone, open your Apple ID settings, find Sign in with Apple, choose Duefree and stop using it.
