How does splitting work?
Add friends by their email address. Once they accept your request, you can split bills with them one to one, or in a group you make for your household or a trip.
To split a bill you paid, choose who it’s for, then split it equally or by exact amounts. Amounts are kept in exact decimals, and Duefree’s server checks every bill so its shares add up to it exactly; any rounding difference goes into the payer’s own share. Everyone on the bill gets a notification.
The Split tab then shows one balance with each friend and each group, taking every open bill between you into account.
If you paid a bill and got something wrong, you can rename it, change its date or remove it, as long as nobody has settled or declined their share yet. The amount and the people on it can’t be changed, so remove the bill and add it again.
I can’t find a friend
Search needs their exact email address. If they signed in with Apple and chose to hide their email, Apple gives them a private relay address that you won’t know, so ask them to send you a request instead.
Is there a limit on bills?
There’s no daily cap on bills. Shared bills have an hourly limit, to stop abuse.
What does “Not mine” do?
If someone puts you on a bill that isn’t yours, open the bill, or find it on that friend’s or group’s page, and tap “Not mine” on your share. Your share closes and the person who paid is told.
Nobody pays a declined share. It’s recorded as declined, not as settled, and it no longer counts in your balance with the person who paid.
Once anyone has declined their share, the bill can’t be edited or removed, so there’s always a record of it.
Is settling up a payment?
No. Settling up in Duefree is a record. Duefree never pays, transfers or holds money.
Pay each other the way you normally do: a bank transfer, cash or whichever app you use. Then record it in Duefree:
- Settle with a friend records that everything open between you is settled, or everything open between you in one group. Duefree nets the bills in both directions and records one payment for the difference.
- Close one share. If you paid a bill, you can close one person’s share of it when they pay you back for just that bill.
- Bills that cancel out close with no payment recorded, because no money needs to move.
The other person is told that you recorded it, and the activity feed shows who recorded what. Duefree can’t see your bank, so a recorded payment is what one of you told it, not proof that money moved.
How do reminders work?
When your open bills with a friend leave you owed money overall, you can send them a reminder from their page, or from the bell beside Settle in a group. Pick a gentle or a direct tone. Before you send it, Duefree shows you the exact notification they’ll get.
You can send each friend one reminder a day, and 20 a day in all. Only the person who is owed money overall can send one.
What is Duefree Plus?
Plus adds two things to the free app:
- Duefree AI, an assistant that runs on your phone. It briefs you on your month, answers questions from your own numbers, reads receipts from a photo, and logs or splits an entry once you’ve checked it.
- Premium themes: five more colours for the whole app.
Tracking, splitting, settling up, budgets, stats and notifications are free today. Plus is billed monthly or yearly through Google Play or the App Store, with a free trial where the store offers one. The store shows the price and when it renews before you confirm.
Plus belongs to your Duefree account, not to one phone, so it comes with you when you sign in on another phone, Android or iPhone.
How do I cancel Plus?
Cancel it in the store you bought it from. Deleting the app doesn’t cancel it. Once you’ve cancelled, Plus stays on until the end of the period you’ve paid for, and it won’t renew.
Google Play
In Duefree, open Profile, then Plan & billing, then Manage in Google Play. Or:
- Open the Play Store app.
- Tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Choose Duefree, then Cancel subscription.
App Store
In Duefree, open Profile, then Plan & billing, then Manage in the App Store. Or:
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap your name, then Subscriptions.
- Choose Duefree, then Cancel Subscription.
How big is the Duefree AI download?
About 2.6 GB, downloaded once, the first time you open Duefree AI. You’ll need that much free space on your phone, and it’s best downloaded on Wi-Fi, because it can use up a mobile data allowance.
On Android, allow Duefree’s notifications and the download can keep going in the background.
After that, the assistant runs on your phone. Your questions and its answers are never sent to an AI server. Like the rest of the app, it still needs a connection to read and save your entries.
Answers take a few seconds, because the model runs on the phone itself. Reading receipts isn’t available on every phone.
Which phones does Duefree work on?
Duefree is made for Android phones and iPhones. The Android app is in closed testing and the iPhone app isn’t out yet: both are coming soon to Google Play and the App Store. On iPhone it needs iOS 15 or later.
To reach the same account on another phone, sign in the same way you did before: the same email, Google account or Apple ID. Signing in another way can give you a separate account.
How do I delete my account?
In the app, open Profile and tap Close account, at the bottom of the tab. Two things must be true first, and Duefree tells you if they aren’t:
- Every shared bill between you and anyone else is settled, in a group or not. A bill that was never yours can be declined with Not mine instead.
- Your Plus subscription has stopped billing. Cancel it in the store first. A subscription you’ve already cancelled doesn’t block deletion, but the rest of its paid period is lost.
Deleting removes your own entries, budgets, friendships and group memberships, and your sign-in. On bills your friends keep, your name becomes “Deleted User”, so their records still add up. A record of any Plus purchase is kept, no longer linked to your name or email.
Can’t use the app? See how to delete your account without it.
